Fewer bison permits for the Henry Mountains among proposals

The number of hunting permits for most of Utah's big game animals could go up this fall.

One exception is cow bison permits for the Henry Mountains. But fewer permits to hunt cow bison on the Henry Mountains is actually good news—it means the bison herd on the unit can start building to a new management objective.

Two major elk hunting changes would happen if proposed updates to Utah's five-year Elk Management Plan are approved. There would be:

  • fewer chances in the future to hunt bull elk on limited-entry units.
  • more chances to hunt spike bull elk in Utah.

Big game app deadline extended

Good news, big game hunters: you have a few extra days to submit your application for a 2010 Utah big game permit.

The application period was supposed to end at 11 p.m. on March 1. But the portion of the Division of Wildlife Resource's Web site (wildlife.utah.gov) where people apply for permits experienced technical difficulties the last two days of the period. The site's speed slowed to a crawl. At times, hunters couldn't even access the site.

These challenges made it difficult for hunters to get their application in before 11 p.m. on March 1, 2010.

For that reason, the DWR will accept applications for an extra week. You now have until 11 p.m. MST on March 8, 2010 to submit your application.

For more information, call the Utah Wildlife Administrative Services office at 1-800-221-0659, the nearest Division of Wildlife Resources office or the DWR's Salt Lake City office at 801-538-4700.
